Sulphadoxime

Sulphadoxine, also spelled sulfadoxine, is a medication belonging to the class of sulfa drugs. It is primarily used in combination with another medication, pyrimethamine, to treat and prevent malaria caused by specific parasites. It is not effective for all types of malaria and resistance to this combination is becoming more common.

Here are some other things to know about sulphadoxine:

  • It is typically used for the treatment of uncomplicated falciparum malaria and know chloroquine-resistant malaria.
  • It can also be used to prevent malaria in travelers going to areas where malaria is common. However, due to increasing resistance, this use is becoming less common.
  • It is available by mouth as a tablet.
  • Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, and diarrhea.

It is important to note that sulphadoxine should not be taken by people with allergies to sulfa drugs or by pregnant women during their first trimester.
