Sodium oxybate (brand name Xyrem) is a drug used to treat narcolepsy, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. It is a form of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a naturally occurring neurotransmitter. Sodium oxybate reduces daytime sleepiness, cataplexy (sudden muscle weakness), and sleep paralysis associated with narcolepsy.
