Silver nitrate

Silver nitrate is a chemical compound often used as an antiseptic, astringent, and cauterizing agent. It is used topically to help stop bleeding and prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns, as well as in the treatment of eye infections. Silver nitrate is also used in some medical procedures, such as urethral dilation, to treat certain types of warts, and to remove extra tissue from the cervix. Silver nitrate can cause staining or discoloration of the skin, and care should be taken to avoid contact with the eyes.

Silver nitrate is a medication that has a variety of uses, including:

  • Antiseptic: In diluted solutions (usually 0.5%), silver nitrate can kill bacteria and other microorganisms. It is sometimes used to prevent infections in newborns' eyes, or to treat wounds and burns.
  • Cauterizing agent: Silver nitrate can cauterize, or stop bleeding from, superficial wounds, such as nosebleeds. It works by destroying tissue, which seals the blood vessels.
  • Removing warts: Silver nitrate can be applied to warts to destroy the tissue and cause the wart to fall off.

It is important to note that silver nitrate can be irritating to the skin and eyes, and it can stain the skin gray or black. It should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
