Quinidine

Quinidine is an antiarrhythmic medication used to treat irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias). It helps to restore normal heart rhythm and reduce symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Quinidine is often used to treat atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and ventricular arrhythmias. It can be taken orally or intravenously. Common side effects of quinidine include nausea, vomiting, headaches, and low blood pressure.

Quinidine is a medication with a long history, used for two main purposes:

  1. Treating Irregular Heartbeats (Arrhythmias): This is its primary function. Quinidine falls under the class of antiarrhythmic medications (class Ia) [1]. It helps regulate a normal heart rhythm by affecting the electrical signals in the heart, making it less susceptible to abnormal activity [2]. It's particularly useful for treating atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and certain ventricular arrhythmias [1, 5].
  2. Treating Malaria (less common): Though less frequently used today, quinidine can also be effective against malaria, a parasitic infection. It targets the malaria parasite during its specific life cycle stage within red blood cells [4].

Important things to know about Quinidine:

  • Not a first-choice medication: Due to potentially serious side effects, quinidine is typically prescribed only when other medications haven't been effective [1, 5].
  • Close monitoring required: When taking quinidine, your doctor will closely monitor your heart rate and function, especially during initial use or dosage adjustments [5].
  • Available forms: Quinidine comes in tablet form and is usually taken several times a day [5].
