Poractant alfa is a medication used to treat respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants. It is a man-made form of surfactant, a substance that normally coats the inside of the lungs and helps them to expand and contract easily. In premature babies, the lungs may not have made enough surfactant, which can make it difficult for them to breathe. Poractant alfa is administered through a tube inserted into the baby's windpipe (trachea).
Poractant alfa is a type of pulmonary surfactant. Pulmonary surfactants are substances that line the inside of the lungs. They help to keep the air sacs in the lungs (alveoli) open. This allows oxygen to pass from the air into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to pass from the bloodstream into the air.
Premature babies may not have enough surfactant in their lungs. This can cause the air sacs to collapse when the baby exhales. This makes it difficult for the baby to breathe. Poractant alfa helps to keep the air sacs open by reducing the surface tension of the fluid lining the lungs. This allows the lungs to expand and contract more easily.
Poractant alfa is usually given to a premature baby soon after birth. It may also be given to a baby who is already having trouble breathing. Poractant alfa is typically given through a thin tube (catheter) that is placed in the baby's windpipe. The medication is usually given in one or more doses.
Poractant alfa is a very effective medication for treating RDS. It can improve a baby's breathing and reduce the need for mechanical ventilation. Poractant alfa is also relatively safe. However, it can cause some side effects, such as apnea (temporary stopping of breathing) and bradycardia (slow heart rate). These side effects are usually mild and temporary.
Poractant alfa is an important medication for treating RDS in premature babies. It can help to improve a baby's breathing and reduce the need for mechanical ventilation. Poractant alfa is also relatively safe. However, it is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of poractant alfa before your baby is given this medication.
