Pentose

Pentose itself isn't a directly used medical substance, but rather a type of simple sugar. They are essential molecules in the body with several important functions.

Pentose has five carbon atoms, while the more common sugar you might hear about, glucose, has six. There are several different pentoses, but two of the most important ones are ribose and deoxyribose.

  • Ribose is a key component of RNA (ribonucleic acid), which is involved in many cellular processes, including protein synthesis.
  • Deoxyribose is a component of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the genetic material that carries the instructions for building and maintaining an organism.

Pentose sugars are also involved in the pentose phosphate pathway, which is a metabolic pathway that produces energy and precursors for the synthesis of nucleotides, nucleic acids, and other important molecules.
