Omidenepag

Omidenepag is a novel, orally active, selective prostacyclin receptor agonist designed for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It is developed by United Therapeutics Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company based in the US. Omidenepag is the first of a new class of drugs known as prostacyclin receptor agonists and is believed to be the first of its kind to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Omidenepag has been proven to improve the symptoms of PAH in those suffering from the disease. It is taken orally once daily and has been shown to reduce the need for hospitalization and improve quality of life for those suffering from PAH. Omidenepag is currently under review for approval by the FDA and is expected to be available to patients in the near future.

Omidenepag, also known by the brand name Ylatan®, is a prescription eye drop medication used to treat glaucoma. Here's a breakdown of its key aspects:

Type of drug: Rho kinase inhibitor

Brand name: Ylatan®

Application:

  • Omidenepag is specifically used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in adults with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
    • Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve if left untreated, potentially leading to vision loss.
    • Ocular hypertension refers to abnormally high pressure within the eye, which is a major risk factor for glaucoma.

Mechanism of action:

  • Omidenepag works by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye. Aqueous humor is a fluid produced inside the eye that helps maintain its shape and nourish its tissues. By enhancing its drainage, Omidenepag helps reduce the buildup of fluid and consequently lowers IOP.

Important points to remember:

  • Omidenepag requires a prescription from a qualified healthcare professional.
  • It is administered as eye drops, typically once daily in the affected eye(s).
  • Self-administration should not be attempted without proper guidance from a doctor.
