Nitenpyram

Nitenpyram is an insecticide used to control fleas in cats and dogs. It is a member of the neonicotinoid family and acts as an insect neurotoxin. It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that allows nerve cells to communicate with one another. When this communication is blocked, the flea becomes paralyzed and ultimately dies. Nitenpyram is quickly absorbed through the skin and begins working within 30 minutes of application. It is safe for use in cats and dogs six weeks of age or older and can be used as often as once a month.

Nitenpyram is a chemical compound primarily used as an insecticide with applications in both agriculture and veterinary medicine. Here's a closer look at its key characteristics:

Function:

  • Belongs to the class of insecticides called neonicotinoids.
  • Acts as a neurotoxin, specifically targeting the central nervous system of insects.
  • Binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in insects, disrupting their nerve impulses and causing paralysis and death.

Applications:

  • Agriculture: Used to control various insect pests on crops like fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals. However, due to environmental concerns and potential harm to beneficial insects, its agricultural use is being restricted in many regions.
  • Veterinary medicine: Sold under brand names like Capstar® and Bestguard®, it's primarily used as a fast-acting oral medication to treat adult flea infestations in dogs and cats.

Important Points:

  • Not effective against flea eggs, larvae, or other life stages of the flea.
  • Relatively short-lived effect: Kills fleas within 30 minutes of administration, with peak effectiveness lasting around 24-48 hours.
  • Not recommended for pregnant or nursing pets, young puppies or kittens, or animals with certain health conditions.
  • Potential side effects in pets include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.
