Metaldehyde

Metaldehyde has two main applications, but interestingly, neither is directly related to human medicine:

1. Molluscicide (Snail and Slug Killer):

  • This is the most widespread use of metaldehyde. It's the active ingredient in many commercially available snail and slug baits, which are commonly used in gardens and agricultural settings.
  • How it Works: Metaldehyde disrupts the mucus production of snails and slugs, hindering their movement and making them susceptible to dehydration. This ultimately leads to their death.

2. Solid Fuel:

  • Less commonly, metaldehyde is used as a solid fuel source.
  • Applications: It can be found in camping fuel tablets and for pre-heating specific camp stoves. In some cases, it might even be included in military rations.

Important Points to Remember:

  • Not a Medicine: Metaldehyde is not a medication and shouldn't be ingested by humans. It can be toxic if eaten and cause serious health problems.
  • Pet Safety: Snail baits containing metaldehyde can be poisonous to pets if ingested. Be cautious when using these products around dogs, cats, or other household animals.
  • Environmental Impact: There are ongoing discussions about the potential environmental impact of metaldehyde use, as it can harm non-target organisms like earthworms.
