Magaldrate

Magaldrate is an antacid medication used to treat heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach. It works by neutralizing the acid in the stomach. It is a combination of magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide, which helps reduce the amount of acid in the stomach and helps to form a protective coating on the stomach lining. Magaldrate is available as a suspension or chewable tablets, and is used to treat symptoms of heartburn and acid indigestion. It is also used to prevent and treat ulcers.

Interestingly, Magaldrate appears to be discontinued in the United States according to several sources (https://www.drugs.com/mtm/magaldrate.html, RxList: https://www.rxlist.com/magaldrate/generic-drug.htm).

Here's what we can tell you about Magaldrate, though it's important to know it likely won't be available if you're in the US:

  • Function: Magaldrate was an antacid medication. It worked by neutralizing stomach acid, providing relief from heartburn, indigestion, sour stomach, and upset stomach.
  • Mechanism: It was a combination of two antacids:
    • Rapid-acting magnesium hydroxide, which quickly neutralizes acid.
    • Slow-acting aluminum hydroxide, which provides a sustained effect.
  • Other Uses: In some cases, Magaldrate might have been used off-label to treat:
    • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
    • Magnesium deficiency
    • High blood phosphate levels (hyperphosphatemia)

Important Considerations:

  • Even when available, Magaldrate could cause side effects such as constipation or diarrhea.
  • It could also interact with other medications, so it was important to inform your doctor about all medications you take before starting Magaldrate.
