Lipegfilgrastim

Lipegfilgrastim (CIMZIA®) is a prescription medicine used to help reduce the chance of infection due to a low white blood cell count, in people with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) receiving anti-cancer medicines (chemotherapy). Lipegfilgrastim helps to restore your white blood cell count to normal levels and helps protect you from infection. It is given as an injection (shot) under the skin.

Lipegfilgrastim, sold under the brand name Lonquex, is a medication used to specifically address a condition caused by some chemotherapy treatments. Here's a breakdown of its key function:

  • Purpose: Lipegfilgrastim helps reduce the duration and occurrence of febrile neutropenia. This is a condition where a patient undergoing chemotherapy experiences a low white blood cell count (neutropenia) accompanied by a fever.
  • How it works: Chemotherapy can attack and suppress the bone marrow, which is responsible for producing white blood cells essential for fighting infections. Lipegfilgrastim acts like a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). G-CSF is a natural protein in the body that stimulates the bone marrow to increase production of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that fights bacteria. By boosting neutrophil production, Lipegfilgrastim helps the body fight infections more effectively and reduces the risk of complications during chemotherapy.

Administration:

  • Lipegfilgrastim is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the abdomen, upper arm, or thigh.
  • The doctor determines the dosage and frequency based on individual factors and the specific chemotherapy regimen.

Important points to remember:

  • Lipegfilgrastim is not a cure for cancer but rather a supportive treatment during chemotherapy to help manage neutropenia and potential infections.
  • It can cause side effects like nausea, bone and muscle pain, headache, and fatigue.
  • Lipegfilgrastim is not suitable for everyone. It's crucial to consult your doctor to see if it's appropriate for your specific situation and discuss any potential side effects or interactions with other medications you're taking.
