Levomefolic acid

Levomefolic acid (also known as 5-MTHF) is a form of the B vitamin, folate. Folate is essential for the synthesis of DNA, cell growth, and the production of red blood cells. It is also important for proper neurological and cognitive development. Levomefolic acid is a form of folate that is more easily absorbed by the body, making it a great option for those who are unable to absorb the traditional forms of folate. It is often used to treat people who have a genetic disorder called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) deficiency. It is also used to treat folate deficiency, anemia, and to help reduce the risk of birth defects.

Levomefolic acid, also known as L-5-MTHF or L-methylfolate, is the naturally occurring, active form of folate.

Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions including:

  • DNA synthesis and repair
  • Cell division
  • Amino acid metabolism
  • Red blood cell production

Levomefolic acid is found naturally in some foods such as:

  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Beans and lentils
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds

However, it can also be taken as a supplement, typically in the form of tablets or capsules.

Here are some of the reasons why levomefolic acid might be prescribed:

  • To prevent neural tube defects: Neural tube defects are serious birth defects that can affect the brain, spine, and spinal cord. Levomefolic acid is recommended for all pregnant women and women planning to become pregnant to help reduce the risk of these defects.
  • To treat folate deficiency: Folate deficiency can cause anemia, fatigue, and other health problems. Levomefolic acid supplements can help to correct this deficiency.
  • In some cases of mental health conditions: Some studies suggest that levomefolic acid may be beneficial in the treatment of certain mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety. However, more research is needed in this area.
