Hypromellose, also known as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), is a semi-synthetic, inert, viscoelastic polymer used as an ophthalmic lubricant, an excipient and a suspending and emulsifying agent in pharmaceuticals. It is a non-ionic, water-soluble polymer, derived from cellulose. Hypromellose is used in a variety of ophthalmic products including ointments, gels, and drops to treat dry eye, to protect the surface of the eye, and to act as a lubricant. It is also used in a wide range of oral and topical formulations, including tablets, capsules, creams, lotions, and suppositories.
