Dextropropoxyphene

Dextropropoxyphene is a centrally acting opioid analgesic used to treat mild to moderate pain. It has been marketed in combination with paracetamol (acetaminophen) as co-proxamol, in combination with aspirin as co-dydramol, and occasionally with ibuprofen. It is available as the hydrochloride salt in both capsule and tablet form. Dextropropoxyphene is a Schedule IV drug in the United States and a Class C drug in the UK.

Dextropropoxyphene is a medication that was once used to treat mild to moderate pain. It is an opioid pain reliever, which means it works by attaching to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to block pain signals.

It was also sold under brand names such as Darvon and Darvocet. However, dextropropoxyphene has been withdrawn from the market in many countries, including the United States and Europe, due to safety concerns. These concerns include:

  • Risk of addiction and abuse: Dextropropoxyphene is an opioid, and like other opioids, it can be addictive and lead to misuse.
  • Risk of overdose: Dextropropoxyphene can cause overdose, which can lead to serious health problems, including death.
  • Risk of heart problems: Dextropropoxyphene can increase the risk of heart problems, such as irregular heartbeat.

Because of these risks, dextropropoxyphene is no longer a recommended pain medication. If you are currently taking dextropropoxyphene, you should talk to your doctor about switching to a safer pain medication.

Here are some safer alternatives to dextropropoxyphene for pain relief:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
  • Naproxen (Aleve)
