Berotralstat

Berotralstat (trade name Bemfola) is a synthetic androgen and a glucocorticoid receptor agonist developed by Ferring Pharmaceuticals. It is used in the treatment of female infertility and is designed to help women produce mature eggs. It is given as an intramuscular injection, typically once a day for up to five days. It is also used to treat endometriosis, a condition where the cells from the lining of the uterus grow outside of the uterus and can cause pain and infertility.

Berotralstat, also known by the brand name Orladeyo, is a medication used to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults and children 12 years and older. It is important to note that berotralstat is not used for treating acute HAE attacks.

Here's a breakdown of key points about berotralstat:

Function: Prophylaxis (prevention) of hereditary angioedema (HAE) attacks. Mechanism of action:

  • Berotralstat acts as a selective inhibitor of plasma kallikrein.
  • Kallikrein is an enzyme involved in the production of bradykinin, a substance that causes swelling and pain during HAE attacks.
  • By inhibiting kallikrein, berotralstat helps reduce the production of bradykinin and thereby prevent HAE attacks.

Uses: Prophylaxis of HAE attacks in adults and adolescents 12 years and older.

Important notes:

  • Berotralstat is not a cure for HAE and should not be used to treat ongoing attacks.
  • It is available as oral capsules taken once daily.
  • The most common side effects of berotralstat include headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and back pain.
  • Berotralstat can interact with other medications, so it is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking before starting berotralstat.
